THE CROYDON WIND SYMPHONY began in 1971 as the Croydon Concert Band.
It was founded by the late Eric Page, who was the bandmaster of the Croydon
Brass Band, and taught music at Croydon High School. He wanted a band for his
students to graduate to after high school. The band has grown dramatically over
the years in size and music ability and has played with artists such as Barry
Crocker, Donald Cant, Judi Connelli, Colleen Hewitt, Tony Barber and Darrel
Cotton. The band contests successfully at the Victorian State Championships and
presents the annual Carols by Candlelight for the Maroondah City Council. In
2000 and 2002 the band was the Winner of the Victorian State Concert Band
Championships in B Grade! (See photos here)The band rehearses every Wednesday from 8.00pm to 10.00pm in Keystone Hall,
Civic Square, Croydon and maintains a healthy performance schedule. In 2002
alone the band played over thirty pieces of music and performed in a variety of events including:
2003 Maroondah Festival in the Foothills
- 2002 and 2003 Maroondah Community Concert Series
- Victorian Concert Band Championships
- Maroondah Carols by Candlelight
In addition, the band holds an annual band camp (see the photos here)
and numerous workshops throughout the year (see photos
here).

Our Musical Director
Brian Hogg was born in Yorkshire, in the north of England, in 1953; he has been a resident in Australia since migrating with his parents in 1964.
His interest in band music has developed from his involvement in The Salvation Army in which he continues to play as a member of his local church.
Brian won the Composer of the Year Award in 1986 & 1989 presented by the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association.
He has twice won an Award for significant contributions to the school band repertoire presented by Brolga Music Publishers and has a growing international reputation as a composer for both brass and symphonic bands.
He has numerous works published from works for beginner bands to university level.
During the last ten years he has adjudicated at contests and numerous festivals throughout Australia where his own compositions have found their way onto the repertoire lists.
As a conductor the role of community music making is an important issue for Brian.
With wide experience with all levels of musicians he strives to continually extend the musicianship of the ensembles he works with.
Coming to CWS is almost a homecoming for Brian as his High School trumpet teacher Eric Page established the group and Brian sat in many rehearsals during the early days of its formation.
Brian desires to continue the heritage of music making that forms part of the history of CWS and looks forward to extending the capacity of the group to make great music.
